Types of Carpeting

Which type of carpeting is your ideal match? Truly, there are no wrong answers, but it’s recommended to take a careful inventory of your surroundings before you make any final carpeting decisions. For an active household that’s always on-the-go, we advise choosing a carpet that’s stain-resistant and moisture-resistant. On the other hand, if comfort is your major goal for a space like the master bedroom, you might consider a plush, fluffy carpet.

Carpet Fiber Types

Your carpet’s fibers, also called pile, will play a major role in determining your carpeting’s feel and function. Carpet pile can be made from both natural and synthetic materials. Some of the different pile materials are nylon, wool, polyester, and olefin.

Nylon carpeting is woven from synthetic fibers. Nylon is so durable, soft, and sturdy that it has become quite popular in all types of interiors. It doesn’t fade from sun exposure and resists stains. However, nylon carpets can be pricier than other varieties.

Polyester carpeting is also synthetically sourced, and has a look and feel that’s very similar to nylon carpeting. An affordable alternative, polyester was once frowned upon by purists, but today it’s actually comparable to nylon in terms of stain-resistance and durability.

Triexta carpeting is a textured synthetic that is very, very rough to touch. Its subtle patterns are intended to conceal the day’s dirt and footprints. Triexta is so durable, it’s often used in hospitality settings, but the typical homeowner on-the-go loves it too.

Olefin/polypropylene carpeting is one of the most luxurious synthetics available. With its lush, velvety feel and its gorgeous patterns, olefin carpets are definitely stunning to touch and behold. However, these carpets are intended only for formal, quiet settings and aren’t designed for heavy use.

Wool carpeting is a natural product made from sheep fibers. Wool carpets have remained steadily popular for their sheer endurance and warmth. This carpeting also holds tight to its colors, while resisting moisture, mold, and mildew.

Where Can Carpet Be Installed?

While carpeting isn’t recommended for bathroom or kitchens, it can be a wonderful addition to many interior settings. Living rooms, bedrooms, and family rooms are wonderful habitats for a new carpet. High-traffic areas, such as stairways and hallways, will generally fare well with a resilient, heavy-duty carpeting, and stain-resistant carpeting that’s equipped to resist small spills is a great all-around option if you have small children or pets in the home.
